Explore Our Electric Bike Conversion Kits

Love your current bike but wish it had electric power? An e-bike conversion kit is the perfect way to upgrade your ride without buying a whole new bike. But the trick is working out which conversion kit is right for you.

Let’s start with the motor size. For daily commuting, you’ll get a decent amount of extra push from a 250W motor. But if you’re looking for something that gets the adrenaline flowing, we suggest looking at our 500W+ motors.

Next, we’ve got the motor placement. There are 3 main types. Front hub, rear hub, and mid-drive motors. Front hubs are easy to install and give you that extra pull on flat roads. A rear hub motor offers better traction and works great for off-roading. And mid-drive motors offer the most natural ride feel and balanced weight distribution.

What is a conversion kit?

An e-bike conversion kit is a motor and battery system that transforms a standard pedal bike into an electric-assisted bike. Rather than buying a new e-bike from scratch, a conversion kit lets you electrify a bike you already own and love - keeping the fit, geometry, and feel while adding electric assist. At Melbourne Powered we specialise in quality mid-drive conversion kits, specifically CYC systems, which drive through the bike's existing drivetrain for a more natural ride feel and better performance on hills compared to cheaper hub motor alternatives.

Are conversion kits legal?

In Victoria, New South Wales, and Queensland, e-bikes are legal to ride on public roads without registration when configured to 250W with pedal assist cutting out at 25km/h. We stock conversion kits that can be set up as fully street legal, or configured for higher performance on private property. Not sure what's right for your situation? Our team can help you choose the right setup before you buy.

How much does a conversion kit cost?

Quality e-bike conversion kits at Melbourne Powered start from $1,690 and go up to $2,095 depending on the kit, with a few optional extras that can nudge the price slightly higher.
Some kits have everything you need to convert your bike except the battery, which is purchased separately. This actually works in your favour - you can choose a battery size that suits your commute distance and budget rather than being locked into whatever came with the kit.
Professional installation is also available at our Ascot Vale workshop if you'd prefer to have it done properly from the start.

Are e-bike conversion kits worth it?

If you're looking for the most affordable way into e-biking, a conversion kit probably isn't the answer. You can buy a quality purpose-built e-bike for the same price or less and it'll be ready to ride straight out of the box. A conversion kit makes real sense is when you already have a bike you love. The fit, the geometry, the way it rides and you don't want to give that up. A quality mid-drive conversion lets you keep everything you love about your current bike and just add the power. The other strong case for conversion is flexibility. Factory e-bikes come with more limited parameters. Conversion kits - particularly the CYC systems we stock give you far more ability to tune the electric assist to your exact needs. That's especially valuable if you have specific requirements around mobility, terrain, load carrying, or just want a setup that's genuinely dialled in to how you ride rather than a compromise off the shelf.

Are e-bike conversion kits waterproof?

CYC conversion kits are designed to handle all riding conditions - rain, road spray, and wet weather commuting included. If it's raining on your ride, you don't need to worry. Like all quality electrical systems, a little common sense goes a long way. Try to avoid leaving the bike sitting exposed in heavy rain for extended periods, and once you're done riding in wet conditions give it a chance to dry out and air properly. As a general rule for any e-bike or conversion - avoid riding through flooded or deeply submerged areas. Water and electrics don't mix beyond what they're designed for.
Ride in it - just don't leave it in it.
