Tern Orox R14 Cargo Bike Review: Specs, Features and Price

In a world where most new e-bikes fall neatly into one of many pre-ordained categories, the Tern Orox R14 blazes its own path. Bending and breaking out from the confines of what a cargo bike can be, the Tern Orox flirts unashamedly with the off-road, touring, and mountain bike categories—creating something that feels very fresh indeed.

But is the Tern Orox all it’s been cracked up to be? Is it the true jack-of-all-trades we didn’t know we needed? Or is it an expensive ‘master-of-none’? In this Tern Orox review, we’ll look under the metaphorical hood of this electrified, cyclical concoction to see whether it’s truly worth your hard-earned cash.

Key Specs & Features

What makes the Tern Orox such an interesting e-bike is that it has been over-engineered in every way. This is because it’s meant to go anywhere, while carrying anything or anyone, even if that ‘anywhere’ happens to be very far away.

But before we get carried away dreaming up camping trips and of selling the family car, it’s worth pausing to look at what actually powers the Orox R14.

Motor & Power

Starting with the heart of the Orox R14, we have the Bosch Performance Line CX motor. A top-of-the-line motor in almost every sense, the Performance Line CX is the current flagship motor from Bosch. One could easily argue that the German-based company has held the #1 spot in e-bike motor production since the beginning, so it’s no surprise that the motor powering the Tern Orox is quieter and more powerful than any other e-bike out there.

The Orox R14’s motor delivers up to 85 Nm of torque and a strong 340% pedal assist. That translates into confident hill climbing, regardless of what you’ve got packed in the back. The Orox isn’t the fastest bike on the market, but it’s certainly one of the most capable and reliable—two important accolades for a bike positioned as a long-range off-road hauler.

Battery & Range

If the motor is the heart of the Orox R14, the battery is its lungs—and they’re enormous. The latest developments in battery size and efficiency are what have made a bike like the Orox possible. It ships with Bosch’s new 800Wh PowerPack battery as standard, already a serious capacity for a cargo platform. But the Orox’s real trick lies in its ability to mount a second battery, doubling total capacity to 1,600Wh and pushing the bike into truly long-range territory.

Tern quotes a maximum range of up to 300km with the dual-battery setup, which of course depends on load, terrain, and assist level. But just to make it clear how good that number is, the Orox allows you to drive from Melbourne to Echuca (on the NSW border) and still have 80km of range to spare. If you lived in Thornbury and worked at Flinders St station, you could commute to and from work 15 times before the Orox would need recharging.

Tern’s intent with this bike is clear: the Orox R14 is a complete rethink of what an e-bike can achieve.

Suspension & Build

The Orox R14’s suspension is definitely its weakest link, because it doesn’t have any. With that said, the R14 is not uncomfortable to ride. It has a strong chassis and relies largely on the natural suspension created by its (frankly enormous) 29” x 4” tyres.

But this is a deliberate choice. Adding traditional suspension to a cargo platform like this would introduce complexity, weight, and potential failure points—three things Tern clearly wanted to avoid.

The R14 uses a sealed Rohloff Speedhub paired with a Gates belt drive, a combination known for low maintenance and reliability in harsh conditions. It’s not light, and it’s not flashy. But it is incredibly durable.

Why Should You Buy This Bike

The Orox R14 isn’t for everyone. It’s a lot of bike and a lot of money too, but more on that in a moment. First, here are some pros and cons at a glance:

Pros

  • Makes a genuine case for selling your car

  • Enormous real-world range with dual batteries

  • Huge load capacity for kids, gear, or shopping

  • Bosch CX motor handles hills easily

  • Rohloff hub + belt drive = low maintenance

  • Surprisingly capable off sealed roads

Cons

  • Not cheap by any means

  • Not light by any means

  • Possibly overkill for some people – but who really cares if you’re having fun?

Tern Orox R14 Price

So by this point, you might already have guessed that the Tern Orox R14 isn’t a budget e-bike. But how much is it actually? Well, you’ll currently find one for $13,295.

Understandably, that price may ward off some readers, especially for a bike without suspension. But make no mistake, the Orox R14 is designed to help people with specific use cases to go and do things that would otherwise be impossible. For those people, this bike can open up a new way of life. With that context in mind, the price starts to look smaller and smaller.

Final Verdict – Is It Worth It?

So, is the Tern Orox R14 worth the money? For the right rider, absolutely.

This isn’t just a casual commuter or weekend toy (though it excels at both). It’s a purpose-built cargo bike with premium components, an enormous range, and the strength to carry serious loads for years on end. With its combination of power, range, and carrying capacity, the Orox is designed to replace car trips entirely.

If that kind of capability fits your life, the value becomes clear very quickly. Want to see if the Orox R14 is right for you? Visit Melbourne Powered at our Ascot Vale showroom for a test ride and experience it for yourself.
