You don’t have to go back many years to remember a time when E-Bikes were still a pretty niche item. Not yet truly embraced by the cycling community, and still seen as a bit of a novelty by commuters and non-cyclists. But fast forward to the present, and everything has changed.
Now, in the year 2026, when we thought we’d have flying cars (that’s a work in progress) and a colony on the moon (also a work in progress), we have suburban streets, beachside paths, and forest trails absolutely full of electric bikes.
That increase in interest has led to increased investment, research, technology, and most of all, choice. LOTS of choice. So much choice that, if you are just getting into e-bikes, you’re probably overwhelmed with the scope of it all.
This guide was written to save you time and—probably—money as well. So you can go and close the 50 Google tabs you have full of e-bike comparisons and spec sheets and whatnot.
This guide is all you’re gonna need.
Before we dive all the way in, here’s a quick note about us. We’re Melbourne Powered, a brilliant (not-so) little electric bikeshop in Melbourne. We live and breathe electric bikes, and have quite literally tried them all.
We test everything we sell before we sell it, we speak to thousands of e-bike and non-e-bike riders every month, and we spend more time on two wheels than behind a desk. If a bike has made it onto this list, it’s because we’ve tested it, we trust the brand, and very importantly, they make our customers happy.
That’s enough about us, let’s talk about you.
It’s not just about getting any old e-bike; it’s about getting the right e-bike. This section is designed to help you do that.
If you happen to know exactly what type/category of e-bike you want, that’s excellent news—feel free to skip this section and choose from the hyperlinks below. BUT if you’re not quite sure yet, allow us to assist.
Let’s start with the most important question. Close your eyes for a second and imagine yourself zipping along on your dream e-bike.
Where are you riding? Are you on a bike bath? A forest trail? In the city?
Do you have a destination, or is it just for fun?
Are you going far or just on a short trip?
Are you carrying cargo or just yourself?
The answers to those questions will determine a lot. If you pictured yourself riding for fun on a forest trail, the answer is easy: head on down to our mountain bike section.
If you pictured yourself on an urban bike path, commuting to or from work, the commuter section is undoubtedly for you. Although, you should definitely still check out the rail trails/trekking/touring bike section as well.
If you want to substitute using your car with your e-bike (more and more common these days), then the long tail cargo bikes are a perfect shout.
For everything else, well we guess you’ll just have to read our recommendations then! Let’s jump into them now.

It feels like a premium trail bike built for serious riders, but with the extra muscle of electric power when you need it. "This one’s personal. Out of the team, Joe actually runs this exact bike himself. If you had to pick one e-MTB to do a bit of everything, that’s exactly the brief of the JAM². It’s stable on descents, confident on climbs, and forgiving enough that you can ride longer without feeling beaten up. Simply put, it’s a playful, fun bike that nails the price-to-performance sweet spot. It’s not flashy for the sake of it—it leans into function over bling, and that’s why it works."

"The Ampd Bros Ace X Pro is what happens when you mix off-road toughness with cruiser vibes. It’s got the muscle to plow through sand, gravel, or even a bit of snow, but it still feels smooth and comfortable to ride. The full suspension makes a huge difference- most fat tire E-bikes can feel a bit stiff, but this one actually soaks up the bumps.
Yeah, it’s a bit on the pricier side, but you’re getting a seriously well-built machine. Plus, let’s be real - this thing turns heads everywhere you go. If you want a fat tire e-bike that’s as fun as it is functional, the Ace X Pro is a top contender."

Hi. I need my first electric bike to get to work and back which is a 25min trip and I am scared of it ever being stolen. I’ve been instructed not to get a cheap Chinese made battery. I like the step through fat boy sort if thing- I think it’s the sort the Sydney delivery people ride??? I am 5”11 and short in the body. Can you help me choose?
