We’re proud to offer such a diverse range of e-bikes, but we know it can make choosing one tricky! The best advice we can give is to shop based on how you’ll use the bike.

If you’re planning to shred forest trails – go for a mountain e-bike. If you fancy an easy-breezy way of getting to work – try a commuter. And if you’re looking to carry goods around without using a car? We have cargo e-bikes for that! If all of those options sound great but you just don’t have the space – we’ve got folding e-bikes for that too.

There’s something for everyone at Melbourne Powered. Come in for a test ride to find the best one for you!

Electric Bikes FAQs

Why would you get an electric bike over a regular bike?

Choosing an electric bike over a regular bike gives you the best of both worlds—traditional cycling with an added boost! E-bikes make it easier to tackle hills, headwinds, and longer distances without breaking a sweat. They’re perfect for commuting, carrying cargo, or just having fun on tougher terrains. Plus, they’re eco-friendly and cost-effective, helping you skip the fuel costs and reduce your carbon footprint while enjoying a smoother, faster ride. Embrace the power and freedom an e-bike offers!

How do electric bikes work?

Electric bikes work by combining traditional pedaling with an electric motor to give you extra power when you need it. The motor is usually powered by a rechargeable battery, which can assist you in different ways, like providing a boost when you start pedaling or helping maintain speed on tough climbs. You can adjust the level of assistance depending on your ride—use more for a breezy commute or less when you want more of a workout. It’s like having a turbo button on your bike, making every ride more fun and versatile!

Are electric bikes dangerous?

Electric bikes are as safe as regular bikes when used responsibly. They’re designed with safety in mind, featuring quality brakes, sturdy frames, and reliable components. Like any vehicle, it's important to ride within your limits, follow road rules, and wear protective gear, especially a helmet. The added speed and power of an e-bike mean you should be extra cautious in traffic and when navigating sharp turns or steep descents. With the right precautions, e-bikes offer a fun, efficient, and safe way to travel!

Do you need a license for electric bike in Australia?

In Australia, you generally don’t need a license to ride an electric bike, as long as it meets certain criteria. If your e-bike has a motor with a maximum power output of 250 watts and only assists you while pedaling (known as a pedal-assist or pedelec), you’re good to go without a license. However, if your e-bike has a throttle that can power the bike without pedaling or exceeds 250 watts, it may be classified differently, and different rules might apply. Always check your local regulations to be sure!

Where can I ride my electric? Can they only be ridden on roads?

You can ride your electric bike in many places, not just on roads! In Australia, e-bikes are typically allowed wherever regular bikes are permitted. This includes bike paths, shared paths, and some off-road trails. However, local rules may vary, so it’s always a good idea to check specific regulations in your area. E-bikes are perfect for commuting, exploring parks, and even tackling some mountain trails. Just be mindful of speed limits and trail etiquette, especially in shared spaces, to ensure a safe and enjoyable ride for everyone!

How fast do electric bikes go?

Electric bikes in Australia typically have a top assisted speed of 25 km/h, meaning the motor will help you up to that speed. Once you reach 25 km/h, you can still go faster, but it will be purely based on your pedaling effort, just like a regular bike. Some e-bikes may have different settings or are built for higher speeds, but they may fall under different regulations. Always check your e-bike’s specifications and local laws to make sure you’re riding safely and within the legal speed limits.

How long does an electric bike battery last? How often do I have to charge the battery?

The battery life of an electric bike can vary depending on the battery size, your riding style, and the terrain. On average, an e-bike battery can last between 40 to 100 kilometers on a single charge. You might need to charge your battery after every ride if you use it for longer distances or high-power settings, or every few rides for shorter trips. Charging typically takes 3-6 hours, depending on the battery capacity. To extend your battery's life, avoid fully depleting it and store it in a cool, dry place when not in use.

Can Electric Bikes get wet?

Yes, electric bikes can get wet. Most e-bikes are designed to be water-resistant, which means you can ride or park them in the rain without worrying about damage.

However, some types of electric bikes are not intended for wet conditions and should be avoided when it’s raining or in wet environments.

While e-bikes can generally handle rain and wet conditions, it’s important to avoid riding through deep water or flooding, as this could damage the motor or battery.

After riding in the rain, it’s a good idea to dry off your e-bike, particularly the battery connections and display, to prevent moisture from causing corrosion over time.

Always check the specific water resistance rating of your e-bike to ensure it’s suitable for wet weather, and remember to store it in a dry place when possible to prolong its lifespan.
